Miami, FL - (January 15, 2010) - Modern Veterinary Therapeutics, LLC announces today that it is entering the estimated $70 millions US heartworm diagnostic market. The USDA-Center for Veterinary Biologics has approved its Canine Heartworm Antigen Test Kit. The product will be presented at the North American Veterinary Conference, the largest veterinary conference in North America with over 7000 veterinary professionals in attendance.

“This new test is the first rapid diagnostic kit using antibodies produced by biotechnology for the detection of heartworm antigens (Patent pending). It is also the first diagnostic test with approved label claim for detection of male heartworms. Indeed, until now, no test is capable of detecting infections with only male worms (JW McCall et al.). Yet, in a recent study, infections with only male worms occur in 5% of all confirmed cases of heartworms at necropsy. This means that veterinarians miss 5% of heartworm cases. There is a very serious clinical implication. Veterinarians rely on heartworm negative results to prescribe heartworm preventative medicines since giving preventative heartworm medication to positive animals is potentially deadly due to the release of toxins from the dead worms. Tests that can detect male heartworms will help veterinarians prevent this error in prescription. Modern Veterinary Therapeutics, LLC is pleased to begin offering this new product that represents the most significant innovation in the heartworm diagnostic market in the last 10 years”, said Dr Cuong Tu Ba, President and Founder of Modern Veterinary Therapeutics.
