The USDA-Center for Veterinary Biologics has approved its Canine Heartworm Antigen Test Kit. The product will be presented at the North American Veterinary Conference, the largest veterinary conference in North America with over 7000 veterinary professionals in attendance.

Yet, in a recent study, infections with only male worms occur in 5% of all confirmed cases of heartworms at necropsy. This means that veterinarians miss 5% of heartworm cases. Veterinarians rely on heartworm negative results to prescribe heartworm preventative medicines since giving preventative heartworm medication to positive animals is potentially deadly due to the release of toxins from the dead worms. Tests that can detect male heartworms will help veterinarians prevent this error in prescription.
